The open back style definitely allows for sound to get through easily, and the clarity is superb for entry level high end headphones. I have 1" plugs (gauges) and they fit over my ears with no problem. Update: the 599's are absolutely wonderful.

June 2022 update (also posted under comment): They'll be here Thursday so I'll update you if I remember. I did however just order Sennheiser 599's because they were on sale and I wanted something a bit more immersive. I've got the Steelseries 5's or 7's (I'm honestly not sure since they were a gift a few years ago) and I use them almost every single day. When linked to my Macbook, for some reason it adjusts the volume of the Macbook wildly every 5 seconds, leading to audio ducking in and out and OSX making a non-stop "bloop" sound for volume adjustment. Apparently Bluetooth support is only remotely useable with phones. I'd hoped this would allow me to be linked to my laptop and PC, so I could use one headset for both.
Finally, the killer feature that made me splurge on these in the first place: simultaneous Bluetooth + proprietary wireless, so you can be connected to two devices.
